Choosing by situation, not by feature count

Match the platform to the way your team actually works

The right WordPress management tool depends on three things: how many sites you look after, whether anyone on your team wants to run infrastructure, and what your clients are paying you to prevent. Answer those and the shortlist writes itself.

Eight platforms covered No sponsored placements Reviewed August 2026
A branching diagram of the two questions that narrow the shortlist Starting from the number of sites you manage, the diagram branches on whether you want to host the dashboard yourself. Self hosted routes lead to open source panels; hosted routes lead to cloud platforms priced per site or per feature. The same routes are described in the scenario section below. How many sites? the first constraint Under about 15 per site pricing stays cheap More than that flat pricing starts to win Want zero admin? hosted dashboards Own the server? open source panels Pay per site Pay once, host it
Two questions do most of the narrowing. The rest is preference.

Find the situation that sounds like yours

Each tab below sets out a common working situation, a shortlist worth trialling, and the questions to put to a vendor before you move anything. These are starting points for your own evaluation rather than recommendations, and every platform named should be tested against your own roster.

You maintain a handful of sites alongside other work

At this size the licence cost is almost irrelevant and your time is the scarce resource. What you want is something that connects in minutes, batches your updates, and does not require you to become an administrator of yet another system.

Why these are worth a look

  • Two of the three let you connect sites without paying anything, so you can compare them on real sites.
  • Nothing to host, nothing to patch, no server to secure.
  • You can add paid capability to a single important site without changing plan.

Questions to ask first

  • Does the free tier include a backup frequency you would actually be comfortable relying on?
  • If one client site is far more valuable than the rest, can you upgrade only that one?
  • How long does a full restore take, and have you tried it?

How each platform packages the same five jobs

Every platform here does bulk updates, backups, monitoring, reporting and branding in some form. What differs is whether each job is included, sold as an add-on, or handed back to you. The meters below summarise that packaging and are described in words on every card.

Included Varies by plan or tier Paid add-on or extension Your responsibility, or not a focus

ManageWP

Cloud

A free core that connects unlimited sites, with premium capability added one feature at a time, per site. The most forgiving place to start and the one that rewards a mixed roster where sites need different levels of care.

MainWP

Self hosted

An open source dashboard you install on your own WordPress site. The core is free for unlimited sites and a paid tier opens a large extension library, so most capability arrives as an extension rather than a subscription line.

WP Umbrella

Cloud

A flat rate per connected site with the core feature set included, hosted in the EU. Product attention sits on catching problems early: error monitoring, update checks and visual comparison alongside the usual backups.

InfiniteWP

Self hosted

A self hosted panel with a free base for core management and annual licence tiers by site count. A low cost route into owning your own dashboard, provided you accept that the free base is genuinely basic.

WP Remote

Cloud

A hosted dashboard built on the same infrastructure as its vendor's backup product, with staging, malware handling and safe updates central to the offer rather than peripheral to it.

WPMU DEV

Cloud

A vendor stack rather than a standalone dashboard, bundling management with a plugin suite and optional hosting and client billing. Strongest when you adopt a large part of the bundle.

Modular DS

Cloud

A newer hosted dashboard sold on interface quality and fixed tiers, covering updates, backups, monitoring and reporting in a single subscription. Worth trialling if daily usability is a deciding factor.

Automattic for Agencies

Programme

Free to join, with an overview of the sites you manage and per site products bought separately. A natural fit when your roster already runs on the same vendor's hosting and site level tools.

Before you move a roster anywhere

Work through this on a trial account with two or three real sites. Ticking boxes here changes nothing on your sites and nothing is saved, it is simply a way to keep track while you evaluate.

Plain terms

Vocabulary these platforms use

The same words mean slightly different things from one vendor to the next. These are the working definitions used across this page.

Connector plugin
The small plugin installed on each managed site so the dashboard can reach it. Sometimes called a child plugin. It holds privileged access, which is why the dashboard's own security matters.
Safe update
An update process that takes a restore point first and checks the site afterwards, rather than simply applying the update and hoping.
Visual comparison
Screenshots of key pages taken before and after an update round and compared, to catch breakage that produces no error message.
White labelling
Replacing the vendor's branding with yours across reports and, on some platforms, the connector plugin your client can see in their site admin.
Self hosted
The dashboard runs on infrastructure you control rather than the vendor's. Lower licence cost, higher operational duty.
Per site pricing
A charge for every connected site. Simple to forecast and simple to quote, but it grows in a straight line as your roster grows.
